RiDE Magazine Test “All the latest New Kit - 850 mile test” June 2009

New kit test with 850 miles under its belt: The RiDE Magazine tester compared the CYCLE SPIRIT City Enduro suit with a previously tested £850 oversuit from REV'IT!.

Verdict: “Comfy and cosy (…) completely eliminates drafts without getting sweaty. (…) Fine in all the rain I’ve ridden through.”

"Two months ago we featured the Rev'It Infinity, a one-piece suit designed to go over your business clothes. It costs £850. We liked it in many ways – it looked neat, it was very easy to put on, it felt like it would last a long time - but we weren't so impressed by its lack of warmth and its imperfect waterproofing. And that price was a bit scary. It makes BMW stuff took cheap. So you can imagine how far north our eyebrows went when we got hold of this suit which, at a glance, does the same sort of job - but for £250.

Too good to be true? Yes and no.

Where the CYCLE SPIRIT City Enduro falls short is in the ease of use. Whereas the Rev'lt suit slips on with two zips, two poppers and two bits of Velcro, the Cycle Spirit suit involves eight zips and three Velcro strips. And, crucially, you can't put it on while you're wearing your bike boots - so you end up hopping about, laying on your back, asking passers-by for help and generally finding it no easier to put on than a traditional two-piece suit. And the cuffs aren't big enough to go over most winter gloves, leaving you vulnerable to rainwater's ability to work its way down your sleeves and into your gloves, however tightly you think you've done them up.

Where it succeeds is in being comfy and cosy in a way that the Rev'lt suit wasn't. And, like any decent one-piece, it completely eliminates drafts around your midriff without getting sweaty.

Is it waterproof? The first time I rode in it, the heavens opened in a Biblically apocalyptic manner and, after 40 minutes or so, some rain found its way in. But when I got home I realised I hadn't done the inner zip up properly - and that's the zip that closes the waterproof membrane.

Since then, it's done just fine in all the rain I've ridden through.

This suit comes with CE-approved armour on the shoulders, elbows and knees, a removable quilted lining and a back pad that can be replaced with a proper back protector. There’s also a good selection of inner and outer pockets, most of them waterproof. It's available in sizes M to XXXL.
