Mesh systems work via an open channel connection to other riders. This means that you can talk to other riders over a much further distance and there is no chain of command like there is with Bluetooth systems. What that means to you is that riders can drop in and out of the connection seamlessly without affecting the other riders' connection. The U-COM 8R isn't compatible with older "Bluetooth-only" intercoms, but will connect to Sena systems, OEM TFT and intercoms in Anycom mode, and will still connect to a phone or GPS via Bluetooth.
