What is a laminate and why does it matter?

Laminates used to be reserved for only the wealthiest of motorcyclists as it was a technique originally used by Gore-Tex. Now the same technique is being used by other big name manufacturers at a more accessible price point. The outer fabric and waterproof membrane are bonded together. What this means to you is that you stay dry without the water soaking through the outer layer and becoming heavy. The jacket is much lighter due to less layering of fabric and getting caught in the rain no longer means having to put on a wet heavy jacket later on in the day.
